Installs piping, appliances, equipment and controls for the use of natural gas or propane as fuel.Gasfitter forms an intricate part of the Plumber, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Mechanic and Steamfitter-Pipefitter trades.

What do I do?

Gasfitting is one of the "pipe-trades" dealing with the installation, maintenance and repair of piping systems. Gasfitters employed by utility companies repair and extend gas mains, and install, repair and service pipes and fittings between mains and buildings. When employed by propane distributors, Gasfitters install and service propane vaporizers, temporary heating equipment, propane metering and dispensing equipment, and propane pumping equipment. Gasfitters employed by mechanical and service companies install and maintain piping and appliances in residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

How much do I make?

Wage Rate: $28.00 (Approximate, not including benefits).

Employers may also provide other benefits such as group insurance for health, dental and vision care, retirement packages, and training benefits. In total, the value of the benefits can range from 20% to 30% over and above the basic hourly pay rate.

Gasfitters work a standard 40-hour workweek with overtime sometimes needed for emergencies or to meet construction deadlines.

With additional training, Gasfitters can transfer their skills to related pipe-trades like Plumber, Steamfitter-Pipefitter, Sprinkler Systems Installer, Refrigeration Mechanic and Instrument Technician.
