AT A GLANCE

As an Elevator Constructor, your work will involve modifying, servicing, and repairing electric and hydraulic elevators, personnel and man-hoists, moving walkways, stagelifts, escalators, and related equipment. You’ll also find yourself doing preventive maintenance and analyzing information to fix a variety of problems.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work environments for construction careers can be located outdoors or indoors or both. Work hours may vary as well. Some positions are seasonal while others are all year round, but part-time. Other positions are project-based and may require you to work full-time until the project is complete. And, of course there are careers that have full-time hours all year round.

TRAINING

To enter this field, you must be:

  • 18 years or older
  • High school grad or mature student with equivalent academic standing
  • Recommended High School Courses: English, Math, Science and Constructio Courses
  • Ideal for those with electrical, mechanical, and/or construction labourer experience

How to start the process:

  • Contact Doug Cann at the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 102 in Winnipeg
  • Pass an aptitude test (70% or higher)
  • Submit a resume for the 'Local Hire List'
  • Potential employers will select individuals from the list to work as an apprentice and send these individuals for training at CEIP
