AT A GLANCE

Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians maintain, repair, service, and overhaul mobile heavy industrial and stationary equipment, such as highway transport vehicles, construction and earth-moving equipment, cranes, paving equipment, tractors and mobile industrial equipment. 

In an organization that maintains its own fleet of heavy-duty equipment: you would follow a regular checklist of inspections for preventive maintenance and make any necessary repairs. 

In a large or specialized shop: you may specialize in engine overhaul, power shift transmissions, fuel pumps and injectors, hydraulic controls, electrical and electronic equipment, air conditioning or track equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work environments for construction careers can be located outdoors or indoors or both. Work hours may vary as well. Some positions are seasonal while others are all year round, but part-time. Other positions are project-based and may require you to work full-time until the project is complete. And, of course there are careers that have full-time hours all year round.
