AT A GLANCE
Gasfitting is one of the “pipe-trades” dealing with the installation, maintenance, and repair of piping systems.
A Gasfitter installs piping, appliances, equipment, and controls for the use of natural gas or propane as fuel. Gasfitter forms an intricate part of the Plumber, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Mechanic and Steamfitter-Pipefitter trades.
Gasfitters employed in different industries perform different duties from each other.
Utility companies:
- Repair and extend gas mains, and install, repair and service pipes and fittings between mains and buildings
Propane Distributers:
- Gasfitters install and service propane vaporizers, temporary heating equipment, propane metering and dispensing equipment, and propane pumping equipment
Mechanical and service companies:
- Install and maintain piping and appliances in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work environments for construction careers can be located outdoors or indoors or both. Work hours may vary as well. Some positions are seasonal while others are all year round, but part-time. Other positions are project-based and may require you to work full-time until the project is complete. And, of course there are careers that have full-time hours all year round.
